Tips for counting money worksheets
- Touch each coin as you count it and slide it to the side, so no coin is counted twice.
- Start with groups of the same coin, like a row of dimes counted by 10s, before mixing different coins.
- When bills and coins are on the same page, count the dollars first and then add up the cents.
Fun math facts
- Four quarters, ten dimes, twenty nickels or one hundred pennies all make exactly one dollar.
- The US penny, nickel, dime and quarter show the presidents Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Washington on the front.
- The cent sign looks like a small c with a line through it, and 100 cents is written as $1.00 with a dollar sign.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Hide coins around a room for a treasure hunt, then count what each person found to see who has the most money.
- Let your child pay for a small item at a store with exact change counted out at home beforehand.
- Play a trading game: roll a die, collect that many pennies, and swap five pennies for a nickel whenever you can.

Frequently asked questions
Should the coins be sorted?
At first, yes. Once counting on from the biggest coin feels natural, use the mixed coins worksheet, where kids have to find the quarters first themselves.
