Tips for 5th grade math worksheets
- Line up the decimal points before adding or subtracting decimals, and fill empty places with zeros if that helps.
- For 1/2 + 1/3, rewrite both fractions as sixths, 3/6 + 2/6, before adding; finding the common denominator is the key step.
- With 2-digit divisors, round the divisor to the nearest ten to guess each digit of the quotient, then adjust if needed.
Fun math facts
- The volume of a box is length times width times height, so a box that is 2 by 3 by 4 holds 24 unit cubes.
- Multiplying by a fraction less than 1, like 1/2, makes a number smaller, which surprises many fifth graders.
- On a coordinate grid the first number tells how far to go across and the second how far to go up, so (3, 5) and (5, 3) are different points.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Fill a small box with sugar cubes or building blocks to check a volume answer by counting.
- Compare unit prices at the store and work out which package is cheaper per ounce, the small one or the big one.
- Hide a few treasure dots on a coordinate grid and let your child find them by calling out ordered pairs.
