- A zero holds a place: 207 has 0 tens, but the zero still needs to be written.
Fun math facts
- Our number system is a base ten system, probably because people have ten fingers.
- The idea of place value with a zero came from India and spread to Europe through Arabic math books.
- Roman numerals have no place value, which made big calculations very hard.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Bundle straws or craft sticks into groups of 10 with rubber bands to build numbers.
- Use dimes and pennies: a dime is a ten, a penny is a one.
- Build numbers from LEGO: a 10-stud brick for each ten and single studs for ones.

Frequently asked questions
What are base ten blocks?
Small cubes are ones, rods of 10 cubes are tens and flat squares of 100 cubes are hundreds. They make place value something kids can see.
What is expanded form?
Writing a number as the sum of its place values: 365 = 300 + 60 + 5.
My child writes 'forty-two' as 402. Why?
That is a very common place value mix-up. Counting rods and cubes on these worksheets helps kids see that 42 is 4 tens and 2 ones.
