Tracing Worksheets
Updated October 2026 · 69 free printables
Free printable tracing worksheets for preschool and kindergarten. Kids follow dashed paths from one picture to another (a car drives home, a bee buzzes to a flower, a rocket flies to the moon), practice straight, slanted, zigzag, wavy, loopy and spiral lines, trace eight basic shapes and learn to write the numbers 0 to 20.
Every page starts with dark dashed lines and a green start dot, then fades to light dashes and dots, so children go from tracing to drawing on their own on a single sheet. The pictures are in color, and the pages print well in black and white too.

Tips for tracing worksheets
- Sit at a table with feet flat on the floor; good posture makes tracing much easier for little hands.
- Let your child trace the line with a finger first, then with a crayon.
- Praise staying close to the line, not perfection: wobbly is normal at this age.
Fun math facts
- Many occupational therapists use a typical order for pre-writing strokes: vertical lines around age 2, circles around 3, crosses around 4 and squares and triangles around 5.
- We trace from left to right because English is read and written from left to right.
- A tripod grip, with the pencil held by the thumb, index and middle finger, usually develops between ages 4 and 6.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Trace the lines in a tray of sand or salt with a finger after finishing the page.
- Use a different color crayon for every row and make the page a rainbow.
- Put a sticker on each finished picture at the end of the line, like a finish flag.
How to print

Frequently asked questions
What age are tracing worksheets for?
Most children are ready for line tracing at around 3 to 4 years old. Straight lines and big curves come first; loops, spirals, diamonds and teen numbers suit 5- and 6-year-olds in kindergarten.
Should my child use a pencil or a crayon?
Start with a thick crayon or a chunky marker, which are easier to grip and to see. Switch to a pencil once your child can stay on the dashed line most of the time.
What do the green dots mean?
The green dot shows where to start and the little arrow shows which way to go. Starting in the right place is a habit that makes handwriting faster and neater later on.
Can I reuse the pages?
Yes. Slip a page into a clear sheet protector or laminate it and use a dry-erase marker, so your child can trace the same lines again and again.
