About this game
Five drawing pattern rows (filled, empty, big, small, filled, empty, empty, a shape with one more side and one more stripe). Kids work out the rule of each row and draw the next picture themselves instead of circling an answer. The answer key on page 2 shows the next picture in red. First graders can do it on their own once they know the strategy at the top of the page.
Tips for using it
- Read the row out loud together before drawing; the rhythm gives the rule away.
- Ask what changed between two neighbors in the row, then whether it changes the same way each time.
- Check the answer key together, then invent one more row on the back.
Printing tips
Download the PDF and print at 100% (or “fit to page” on A4). Page 1 is the game and page 2 is the answer key with the answers in red; print just page 1 if you want to keep the answers for checking. The PNG shows page 1 only. Free for personal, family and classroom use.
