Tips for long division worksheets
- Write a short list of the divisor's multiples beside the problem before starting; it makes every divide step faster.
- If the number you need to subtract is bigger than what you have, the digit in the quotient is too big; try one less.
- Write a 0 in the quotient whenever the divisor does not go into the number you just brought down.
Fun math facts
- The number being divided is the dividend, the number you divide by is the divisor, and the answer is the quotient.
- A remainder is always smaller than the divisor; if it is not, the quotient can still grow by at least one.
- Long division is really repeated subtraction done in big chunks, one place value at a time.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Split a pretend prize of $156 among 4 winners on paper, then check each share with play money.
- Have your child teach you one problem step by step while you play a student who keeps forgetting to bring down.
- Use a different colored pencil for each step (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) on the first few problems.
